Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) offer best practices in the serving of abused children through a comprehensive approach. Collaboration between law enforcement, child protective services, prosecutors, medical providers, mental health counselors, and victim’s advocates is essential to meet the needs of the children and families who have been affected. How to Respond to a Child Who Discloses Abuse:

Listen.

Listen to the child carefully and avoid expressing your own views.

Reassure.

Tell the child that it’s not his/her fault and that you are glad he/she told you.

Report.

Contact local law enforcement or SD Child Protective Services at 877-244-0864 to report the abuse. In case of an emergency, call 911.
